We are selling this small stock which are the remnants of the first edition passed to us as part of a deal we have done in order that the author (Paul Sellers) can regain full control and issue a better, revised edition. This means that this book will be replaced soon with something better. Please bear this in mind when purchasing it. If you really want a copy of this first edition, then now is your chance but we want to be very clear that we think the better version of this book is yet to come and if you bear with us you can buy that version hopefully some time later in 2021.
About the Book
This book is Paul Sellers’ first published book. It contains his well-known foundational course in hand tool woodworking. It was published in 2011 and has sold nearly 20,000 copies.
This book outlines some background details about wood and woodcraft and then it gives an overview of important woodworking hand tools. It has a section shaping wood with the basic steps needed to build a few small shaped projects.
Core to Paul’s foundation course is his saying “with three joints and ten hand tools you can make just about anything that has ever been made from wood”. The book details those three joints. They are, the dovetail, mortise and tenon, and housing dado. Then the book develops and shows how you can apply each of those joints in a Shaker-style box, chairside table, and small wall shelf.
The book also gives a brief outline of building a small workbench.
Finally, Paul shows how to sharpen each of the main categories of tools because without sharp tools building fine furniture is virtually impossible.

About the Author
This book is by the renowned woodworking teacher Paul Sellers. Paul trained as a woodworker through an apprenticeship that started in 1965. He has taught thousands of people woodworking through courses in the US and UK. He is an advocate for his craft and has reached many more people by recording instructional videos of woodworking techniques and broadcasting them via the internet. Paul is dedicated to ensuring that woodworking is an accessible craft that anyone can enjoy.
Paul writes and presents videos on woodworking that are intended to provide accessible instruction to those who will likely never be able to go through apprenticeship training as he did. Although Paul has earned a living as a woodworker, for most of his working life he refers to himself as an ‘amateur woodworker’ because, like those he teaches, he still does it primarily for love of the craft.
